Wine packaging in climate emergency:
How sustainability and innovation lead the way

Should the fine wine and luxury packaging industry be concerned about packaging for mass-market wines? Absolutely, if its longevity is at stake. As the wine – and especially fine wine – industry is more impacted by climate change than most, it should be more involved in climate action by reducing its CO2 emissions. In fact, round, glass wine bottles, which are the single largest contributor to wine's carbon footprint and should be the main target for the sector. In this session, Garçon Wines/Packamama will explain the importance of prioritizing sustainability within luxury packaging and how their climate-friendly flat wine bottles are a benchmark example of packaging that protects the Earth.

How to create an eco-designed and collaborative range of organic wines? The example of Cerço in Burgundy

Two Burgundy wineries, Vignerons des Terres Secrètes and Nuiton-Beaunoy, united within Union des Vignerons Associés des Monts de Bourgogne sign a 100% committed, responsible and innovative range. The employees, willing and involved, wanted to work on an eco-design project aiming to create the least impacting cuvée possible for our ecosystem. The goal of the project was to reconcile the respect for the environment and economic viability. This ambitious and committed approach gives birth to Cerço, an eco-designed and collaborative range.

How to combine attractive packaging and sustainability

Today, sustainable packaging concepts made of paper, cardboard and paperboard often represent the opposite of fancy packaging: a rather matt varnish, brown cardboard or a structured surface can sometimes appear less premium. However, packaging finished with metallic effects can also be sustainable and recyclable.

KURZ, the world leader in thin-film technologies, is making significant efforts to ensure sustainable environmental protection, resource conservation, waste reduction and recycling of finished products. What has Kurz undertaken on this subject? Are KURZ films recyclable? How much aluminum is actually used in my product? Is my decorated packaging recyclable?

Road to CO2 zero label

We present our path to the ZERO CO2 label based on our ability to evaluate and measure existing production. We follow with proposals for materials, technologies and processes that lead to an improvement in the flow and waste during production, finally proposing the possibility of achieving the compensation of CO2 emissions to have a label produced with a zero-carbon impact.

Digitize your quality labeling and marketing claims

How can you speed up the review of your packaging with ManageArtworks?

ManageArtworks is the cloud solution that allows brands and retailers to develop their packaging online and collaborate remotely.

With ManageArtworks, you digitize the content of packaging labels: text, pictograms and images. The quality, marketing and packaging departments gather and validate all this regulatory and commercial information.

The workflow integrates the whole packaging development process including the required traceability (ISO 9001:2015), from translations and their follow-up to the validation of the information, for each required language.

You can then carry out the proofreading of the graphic labels (artworks) by comparing the texts, icons of the packaging brief with the first version of artworks and the versions between them (pixel and text comparison).

Once the packaging is validated, the graphic files are released for printing and the content - images and product information – is sent to the merchant/e-commerce sites.

Contemporary finishes for premium glass packaging

The packaging industry is currently going through an unprecedented transition and glass as a sustainable packaging solution is in continuous up-stream. The global output and mass production of glass packaging is continuously growing to strongly abandon the negative environmental impacts of plastic-packaging components. Therefore, direct finishing processes for glass- and aluminium-packaging, including FMCG products, are specifically monitored by the food and beverage industry. Especially convenient products can be decorated with state-of-the-art economic processes, which make extra-labelling in paper or vinyl, expensive de-inking processes and other packaging-residues redundant in the food and beverage filling-lines. Peyer FOILS presents two contemporary decoration processes, made for single- and multi-fill glass-packaging and sustainable glass-recycling.

Counterfeit: 2 300 000 000 good reasons to fight it. How? We have technologies to do it

Consumers struggle to distinguish the original products to counterfeit, and this is even truer with online purchases.

One out of three people (even though in many countries they are one out of two) and on average approximately one out of ten Europeans (9%) have declared that they have bought counterfeit goods.

According to the 2020 report of EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office), the wine counterfeit business causes a damage of 2.3 billion euros.

The necessity to fight counterfeit and the gray market is becoming more and more urgent everyday: between 2012 and 2020, the counterfeit wine market has deeply increased by 15%, damaging the social fabric of producing companies.

Rotas started several years ago in researching pragmatic, high-technology, fast and long-lasting solutions in the counterfeit fight: constant investments in various technologies allow Rotas to be able to guarantee the authentication of products.

Thanks to innovative print solutions, we can implement different solutions – such holograms, special inks, RFID, augmented reality and more – to make counterfeit extremely hard, and even impossible.

Our solutions are studied to match customer's demands and make each bottle unique and unreplicable.

Green Gen Technologies - Alternative to glass packaging

We are an engineering office specialized in sustainable packaging. We are currently working on packaging alternatives to glass bottles for wine and spirits. Green Gen Technologies® is a French startup founded in 2017 by James de Roany and Séverine Laurent. Together, they have created a revolutionary, lightweight, glass-free packaging made up of flax-fiber and thermoplastic resin composites, which is recyclable and biobased: the Green Gen Bottle ©. This is a major and disruptive innovation in the wines and spirits' field that will help to reduce the sector's carbon footprint.
